It took about the usual 30 minutes or so, with occasional pumping, to get the oil up and out of the crankcase via the dipstick. I then wriggled under the car and removed the 17mm bolt at the bottom of the crankcase. WebJan 15, 2002 · I disagree on the "draining method getting all the oil out",you see, your car is tilted on an angle, meaning some oil is going to collect at the lowest part of the pan, between the back wall and the bottom. An oil extractor removes it while the car(and pan) is level. The oil extractor tube rests at the lowest point of that pan.

On my Jag V12, draining the oil gets about 10 qts out; the extractor can pull out 11. On the new Xj8, the extractor can get 6 qts which should be all that is in the sump - I haven't tried to drain this one yet.
