WebDescription Harriet Beecher Stowe’s second antislavery novel was written partly in response to the criticisms of Uncle Tom’s Cabin by both white Southerners and black abolitionists. In Dred, Stowe attempts to explore the issue of slavery from an African American perspective. WebStowe considered Ruffin, based on her reading of the rhetoric of his decision, to be an exemplar of the dilemma in which slavery placed honorable southern men. In her view, these men may have detested slavery, but they were compelled to uphold it.
WebStowe was born on June 14, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut, the seventh child of famed Congregational minister Lyman Beecher and Roxana Foote Beecher. Her famous siblings include elder sister Catherine (11 years her senior), and Henry Ward Beecher, the famous preacher and reformer.
